College of Charleston finished up the season with a heartbreaking loss to Costal Carolina on Monday, June 7, 2010, in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The only thing keeping the fans seat warm was the heat of the mid-day game. The game went into an extra inning and sent the Cougars home with an 11-10 season-ending loss. This high scoring game was quite the spectacle, regardless of which team you were rooting for.
The loss went to Heath Hembree, a junior at the College of Charleston. Hembree was only responsible for one of Coastal Carolina’s eleven runs. On a more positive note, Cole Rakar, the Cougars center fielder, compiled four hits, two homeruns, and batted in six runs to lead his team.
Joey Bergman, a senior for the Cougars, was the last to bat in the bottom of the ninth, and had the bases loaded. He hit a weak ground ball to the shortstop, and appeared to beat the throw to first. The game winning run scored on that weak ground ball, but Bergman was called out at first. This controversial call sent the game into the one, and only, extra inning.
Rich Witten was the first up to bat for Coastal in the 10th, hitting a stand up double. He was then pushed over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Witten soon after took home plate with a wild pitch from Hembree. The Cougars took to the offensive side soon after, down a mere one run in this twenty-one run game. The third and final outs came and went without a single run from the Cougars, ending up their season.
The College of Charleston ended up their season at an impressive (44-19). They will have a smooth six months off to recoup from this devastating season ending performance.
