Monday Night Blitz is Back at the Charleston Municipal Gold Course

By Reid Armstrong

(Charleston, S.C.)- The Charleston Municipal Golf Course announced its annual “Monday Night Blitz” tournament has begun as of May 10, 2010. The Monday Night Blitz is a nine hole, four-man, captain’s choice style tournament. There is a 96 player cut limit, so tee times are accepted starting at 7:00 a.m. Monday mornings.

The Charleston Municipal Golf Course, commonly known as the Muni, does not place any age restrictions to enter the tournament. Many of the teams are comprised of 17-65 year old male and female golfers. Women and seniors are allowed to play from the gold tee markers unless stated by the tournament director Jim Lamn.

There are two teams per hole for this 5:30 p.m. shotgun start tournament. It costs $35.00/player to enter the tournament, with multiple prize packages at stake. This entry fee includes carts for the players, team placement gift cards and a cash prize for the players that hit their own golf ball closest to the pin on the two par-3’s numbers four and eight.

1st place team will receive a $95.00/player merchandise only gift card to the pro-shop.
2nd place team- $45.00/player gift card
3rd place team- $35.00/player gift card
4th place team- $20.00/payer gift card

The average scores for the tournament, so far this season, have been in the -4 to -5 range. The winning scores have been consistent at -8 or -9 each week. Phil Meihe, a four year “blitz” veteran says, “The blitz is fun for everyone, there are guys out here to drink, guys out here for the win and guys out here for the companionship.”

There will be a beverage attendant out on the course, matching the assortment of adult and non adult beverages that can also be purchased in the snack bar.

Each player participating in the tournament can also enjoy a complimentary steak dinner, including mashed potatoes, green beans and endless breadsticks. The steaks are delivered every Monday, and marinated by seasoned head chef, Naomi Smith. Free fountain beverages are provided throughout the entire tournament.

The first four tournaments were completely booked, but three weeks of rain have diminished the normal group down to an average of 75 players. The last day for the tournament is the second Monday of August. All payers are welcome, and are guaranteed a great time.

The Monday Night Blitz is the cities largest acting weekly golf tournament. The Charleston Municipal Golf Course offers the most tournaments for the city as well. A city run golf facility allows them to remain affordable, while maintaining adequate golfing standards. They offer three PGA certified tournaments throughout the year. The City Amateur and The City Four Ball are two of the three tournaments that are open to all of the Tri-county area residents. Six month and year long memberships are available, and are recommended for regular golfers.
